The Best wine road trips in Spain

Visit Spain along the wine roads, which will take you to some of the most important wine-growing areas of our country. You will discover how they are processed and how they taste wines recognized all over the world. You will also learn about the cultural, natural and gastronomic heritage of very different regions, but linked by a common characteristic: good wine.

Road tripping is the best choice you have!

The amazing wine roads offer the chance to even explore the country in a different way. You can make it in a customized and convenient way by using a car rental comparison site like Holiday Autos. I used it for my latest trip to Spain and it was a blast! I explored so many hidden gems and tasted so many delicious wines in a relaxed, cheap and flexible way. Renting a car is the best option you have if you want to embark on this type of trip!

Galicia

You can begin your journey from Galicia, in northern Spain. Here is the itinerary of the Rías Baixas, the cradle of the Albariño: you will be amazed at the taste of this fresh and young wine, ideal to combine with some of the delicious dishes of Galician gastronomy, such as fish and seafood.

Take advantage to visit the coast, with spectacular beaches ideal for water sports or simply to admire in all their glory, as in the case of the National Park of the Atlantic Islands. And the best conclusion for this itinerary is definitely a visit to La Toja, where you can treat yourself to a beauty treatment in one of its establishments and spas. I really enjoyed this itinerary!

Basque Country

Still in northern Spain, but this time in the Basque Country, there is the Rioja Alavesa Route. Do you know that some of the most prestigious Spanish wines are produced here? In this area, you can admire the new cathedrals of wine: avant-garde buildings and cellars, the work of the most prestigious contemporary architects, such as the Ysios cellars of Santiago Calatrava and the Wine City of Frank O. Gehry, in Elciego.

Treat yourself to a winetherapy treatment to tone your body and mind. And, of course, taste the Basque gastronomy, which has gained worldwide recognition.

Navarre

At a little less than 100 kilometers, there is another wine route, that of Navarre. You will visit countries such as Olite and Tafalla, which preserve evidence of the importance of this land in the history of the Camino de Santiago, declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO. And of course, you will taste the wines, especially the rosés.

Aragon

The journey then continues in Aragon, along with the Somontano Wine Route. In this area, which extends to the slopes of the Pyrenees, exquisite wines are produced. But it is just one of the many surprises that this area has in the province of Huesca, where in addition to the vineyards and monumental complexes of countries such as Barbastro or Alquézar, you will find the natural park of the Sierra and the canyons of Guara: a unique landscape in Europe, with canyons and gorges that are a true paradise for lovers of adventure sports.

Catalonia

Less than 200 kilometers away in Catalonia, you can take the Penedès wine and quarry routes. In this land the quarry is born, a drink of universal fame. Try the unmistakable flavor and discover the impressive cultural heritage of this area, with numerous examples of Romanesque and modernist art, and guided tours to castles and cellars.

Murcia

Something similar awaits you along the wine route of Jumilla, in Murcia. You will be amazed by its wines, many of which have received several awards in recent years, but also the historic center of this city and the surrounding natural environment, with the Regional Park of the Carche sierra, where you can practice sports such as hiking, cycling, paragliding and hang gliding.

Andalusia

Further south, in Andalusia, the Montilla-Moriles wine itinerary enters the province of Cordoba. Along with this route, you will have the opportunity to try perfect wines also to accompany tapas. Experience this gastronomic tradition deeply rooted in the territory. And of course, go to Córdoba, whose monumental complex and the Mosque, declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO, are not to be missed.

Castile

The La Mancha Wine Route is the last stop on this interesting journey. Did you know that for hectares of cultivated vineyards Castile – La Mancha is the most extensive wine-growing area in the world? In this land, made forever immortal by Miguel de Cervantes in Don Quixote, you can admire a unique landscape of windmills, endless expanses of vineyards and important historical complexes.

These are the best wine road trips all over Spain. I highly recommend to take some time to explore different areas and tasting different kind of wines for a fulfilling, fun and relaxed road trip experience. Spain and its wines won’t let you down!
