In the past two months, we are seeing full-frame mirrorless cameras from top-notch camera manufacturers like Canon and Nikon. So far, only Sony was playing in the full frame mirrorless camera segment. Finally, Panasonic has also joined the competition. Does it mean that they are slowly going to wipe out the DSLR cameras? So, what would happen to all those people who had invested in DSLR camera lenses?

The reduction in weight and size is the main interesting part of the full frame mirrorless cameras. In this age where more people are traveling to different parts of the world, the weight of the camera is of big concern. Nobody wants to travel with lots of weight in their bag. So, they tend to switch over to these cameras. So, this can be an ideal camera for a travel photographer.

As a matter of fact, these cameras are in their beginning phase. So, we need to wait and see how it matures? Sony is very successful with their full frame mirrorless camera body, a7R III. The image quality and noise performance of this camera body are excellent. This is the main reason for its popularity. So, Canon and Nikon want to get their share in this market with their models.

 

There are different types of photography and each type demands for specialist lenses. Currently, there are wide angle and portrait lenses for the full frame mirrorless cameras. So, if you are a Landscape photographer or a Portrait studio photographer or if you are into real estate photography then you can consider trying it out.

Unfortunately, there are no telephoto lenses to support the wildlife and sports photographers. I feel that wildlife photographers would have loved to keep the full frame mirrorless cameras as one of their camera bodies. Instead of introducing an additional adapter, Canon and Nikon could have made the body contacts compatible with the existing lenses.

 

 

Canon and Nikon have also introduced their adapters for DSLR cameras. You can make use of these adapters so that the existing lenses become compatible with these mirrorless camera bodies. But there will be some degradation in the focusing speed. Sony has got less number of lenses supporting their full frame mirrorless cameras. So, Canon and Nikon will have a slight edge over Sony by the introduction of their DSLR lens compatible adapters.

They are less costly when compared to the full frame DSLR camera bodies which come with the same features. Performance wise, they are more or less the same. The only factor where they fail is in the number of camera lens options. Full frame mirrorless cameras have very few lens options since they are new in the market. But, I expect the lens line up to catch up in a couple of years. By 2020, we can expect many more camera lenses for these bodies. This can even put a slow decline to the existing DSLR market.

So, it is an interesting battle between the full frame mirrorless cameras Vs full frame DSLR cameras. We need to wait and see how the full frame mirrorless camera market matures in the coming years. I hope DSLR cameras won’t have to face the same fate like the old Symbian Operating system, which got replaced with the Android system.
