Cheapest Cable Alternatives in Canada

Basic cable is cheaper. But if you want movies and other channels, it will be more expensive. And you need to pay for installation or other costs.

When cable TV first came to our town, there were only 6 channels. I went to highschool with someone who lived near the first family that got cable TV.

Technology has changed. Now there are more ways to watch TV without a cable subscription. If you want to save money, but also cannot live without your favorite TV shows, here are some alternatives to cable TV that will not cost as much.

Top Alternatives Cable TV

  • Fox TV

  • Sling TV
  • Hulu
  • Netflix
  • Peacock
  • Disney Plus
  • Youtube TV

  • Fox TV

The Fox Broadcasting Company is located in America, so it can only broadcast its programs to people in America.

Although Fox TV is available without charge over the air, you must have a current US television cable subscription to access it online.

You will need a VPN to watch Fox TV whether you watch it alone or with an active US TV cable subscription.

While Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are commonly used to access geographically restricted websites, they may also be utilized to encrypt internet traffic and preserve privacy online.

When a user connects their IP address is disguised (your IP address is your online ID), they use private servers to operate VPNs.

This is ideal for geo-restriction. If you connect to a US server via the VPN, your IP address will be identified as originating in the United States.

As a result, if you connect VPN to one of the US servers to access Fox TV’s streaming service, the service will believe you’re from the United States and will allow you in.

  • Sling TV

Sling TV has put a DVR on their service. You can watch your favorite shows on it. It doesn’t cost anything and is easy to set up. There are other packages too, like Sling Orange and Sling Blue.

With Sling Blue, you get 45 channels, including different networks from those in the Sling Orange package.

In addition to NBC Sports Network and Bravo TV, it offers streaming channels outside the U.S. like you can watch AMC, Cartoon Network, History Channel, and Fox TV in Canada or anywhere overseas.

You can buy both packages for $45/month (discounted from the regular price).

As of this writing, Sling TV’s Orange package includes 32 channels. The Blue package features 47 channels and one package offers a variety of channels from each bundle.

This is the package you would most likely select depending on what channels you are interested in. But sadly you can’t access Sling TV outside the USA due to geo-blocking policies and streaming rights agreements. However, you can still get and watch Sling TV in Canada by obtaining an American IP address with the help of a VPN.

  • Hulu

In contrast to Netflix, the streaming service Hulu charges $5.99 a month for ads with its subscription package.

Hulu TV subscribers have the option to watch episodes of their favorite series without advertisements.

An $11.99 monthly fee will provide additional streaming other than a single device simultaneously; new episodes are typically added on Hulu TV Thursdays after they air on network television.

  • Netflix

Netflix has three different plans. Basic, Standard, and Premium.

The Basic Package

Netflix has a basic package. It includes:

  • You will pay $8.99 each month for this service, plus taxes.
  • HD and Ultra HD are not available.
  • One device at a time
  • Viewing Unlimited
  • You can see your home on your laptop, desktop computer, phone, tablet, or TV.
  • You can cancel any time you want.
  • The first month is free.

In addition, you can’t stream in high definition with this package. It would work for someone who lives alone or has a small household. It also might work if they don’t watch much TV.

The Standard Package

We currently have the Netflix Standard package, which offers a variety of features and perks.

  • $14.00/month, plus taxes.
  • There is high-definition, but not Ultra HD.
  • There are only two Streaming Devices.
  • Unlimited viewing time
  • Viewing on your laptop, desktop, or phone
  • With our 24/7 customer service, you can cancel anytime.
  • The first month is free

The Standard Package is a good choice if more than one person will be watching television at a time and you watch the same programs.

Yet, the Standard plan has enough data for two people to stream at once. Therefore, it meets our needs just fine.

The Premium Package

The Netflix subscription also offers a premium package.

  • 17.99 per month, plus local tax
  • HD and UHD are available
  • Streaming devices, up to four
  • Unlimited video content
  • Viewing on laptop, desktop, phone, or tablet
  • You can cancel anytime
  • The first month is free of charge

Netflix has a lot of movies and TV shows. They are popular because they have a lot of exclusive TV shows, like House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black.

It is good for families to use Netflix because many people can watch it at the same time. Netflix supports the ‘Mystery Science Theater 3000’ reboot.

  • Peacock

Peacock is a TV and movie streaming service. You can watch it for free without needing a credit card, by signing up online with your email address.

It has many shows from major Hollywood studios like DreamWorks and Universal; movies; and online news in its app.

There are two plans. The first one is the Basic Plan, and it costs $4.99 each month. It gives you a lot of content, but it also has ads.

The next plan is the Premium Plan and it costs an extra $5 per month to be ad-free when buying TV shows from iTunes or Amazon Video.

  • Disney Plus

Disney+ will give you exclusive content, as well as the option to pay monthly for $6.99 or annually for just $69.99 per year. Downloading and keeping titles is possible if you are a member of Disney+.

Disney+ operates on unlimited downloads and storage space for devices of up to 10. It also streams four devices at a time on compatible equipment.

Disney+ is a streaming service that provides a lot of Disney movies. It also has some episodes of other TV shows. You can subscribe for $12.99 per month and get a bundle with Hulu and ESPN too!

  • YouTube TV

YouTube TV costs more than some other streaming options, but with over 85 channels and a price starting at $64.99 per month, it may be worth your time to compare the different offerings before deciding which is right for you.

YouTube TV is available with a zip code and has additional channel packages.

Go to the “Channels” section using the link above and type in your zip code to see exactly what channels you can get with YouTube TV in your area.

Conclusion

If you want to watch TV, but do not have cable or satellite packages, you can get it for free. You can find your favorite shows by looking at their website or YouTube.

For a more substantial viewing menu, you can sign up for one of the streaming services (usually with a free trial).
