Do yourself a favor and pick up a dust mask from your local hardware or garden shop to avoid any discomfort caused by airborne dust and mold during the process.

Step 2 – Take off the vent covers with the aid of a screwdriver before removing any air filters. You will need to wash the inside of the duct in addition to the ceiling or wall where the duct is connected. Cleaning this area properly is difficult, so homeowners should be careful not to accidentally damage the wall or ceiling with the force of the vacuum.

Step 3 – Next, use the vacuum to clean the ducts as far back as you can reach. Start off by taping the vacuum accessory to the extension hose prior to attempting a cleaning with the vacuum. Having the accessory properly secured with prevent you from losing the accessories as you have to reach down into the duct.

Step 4 – Depending on the condition of the present filter, you may need to purchase a replacement. If you require a replacement, be sure to take the old filter into the store to use as a reference. There’s nothing worse than getting all the way back home only to realize that you’ve accidentally grabbed the wrong filter. Once the new filter is in place, you should take the time to vacuum the vent covers in order to remove any excess mold and dust particles that still remain lodged in the covers. Air filters should be changed on a monthly basis to ensure your system’s full functionality and enhanced performance.
