Top midsize autos that deserve your attention

Initially, choosing an SUV most often meant choosing a midsize model. Innovative vehicles such as the Explorer, Grand Cherokee, and Pathfinder turned this niche into a mainstream family transportation option. Today’s midsize vehicles, many of which fall into the crossover category, reflect different trends. Three-row variants are designed for family travel, providing an alternative to minivans. These cars are designed for larger families that need extra cargo or seating for the occasion.

Two-row SUVs are good for those who prefer a more compact vehicle without extra seatings. On the other hand, traditional body-on-frame models counter the crossover trend by offering a rugged appearance. While these models suit families, they may sacrifice some efficiency and comfort. Also, don’t forget about transmission that depends directly on your lifestyle and preferences. The overall 4×4 and 4×2 comparison makes navigating your way to the best choice easier. This list compiles the top models for different preferences.

2-row models

Subaru Outback

Formally, the Outback does not belong to the SUV category. Despite its station wagon-like exterior, the Outback outperforms many midsize crossovers with more ground clearance, cargo capacity, rear seat space, and fuel economy.

It stands out as an efficient and versatile vehicle, especially appealing to those who don’t just conjure up the image of an adventurer but take a trip off the beaten path. Add to that a wealth of safety and infotainment features, standard all-wheel drive, high-reliability ratings, and improved interior quality, and you have a highly recommended and loved vehicle.

Ford Bronco

Ford’s iconic SUV is back with the expected cool retro design in two- and four-door configurations. The Bronco offers a variety of trim options, each with unique styling, features, and experiences. Various trims, including Black Diamond, the new Everglades, the formidable Bronco Raptor, and a manual transmission package, are available. The comparison to the Wrangler begs to be made: the Bronco is better as an everyday driver, while the Wrangler has its strengths for trail adventures. But for the whole picture, read comparative reviews like Ford VS Jeep. Ultimately, both vehicles are worthy contenders and have earned their place on this list.

Jeep Grand Cherokee

After a decade of service, the fourth-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee gives way to the fifth generation auto. The new model has retained the design of its predecessor but at the same time has acquired a technological interior, exceptionally luxurious in the top kits. Noteworthy is the Trailhawk variant, which enhances off-road capabilities with increased ground clearance, turning off electronic traction control, all-terrain tires, and additional driving modes. Unfortunately, engine options, including the older V6 and V8, have undergone minor changes, affecting power and fuel economy. Incidentally, in the two-row midsize category, the Grand Cherokee stands out by offering a plug-in 4xe hybrid unavailable in the larger Grand Cherokee L.

3-row models

Hyundai Palisade

The 2024 Palisade stands out in Limited and Calligraphy trim levels, making it a worthy competitor to luxury SUVs. In particular, it boasts a stylish, well-made interior, spacious third-row seats, and a roomy cargo area, making it a strong contender. While the Palisade excels in driver assistance and safety, it lacks a hybrid option or a more powerful engine, suggesting room for improvement.

Honda Pilot

The 2023 Honda Pilot underwent a thorough redesign, retaining its family orientation and bringing a pleasing sense of style, especially evident in the TrailSport variant. Practicality remains the Pilot’s primary differentiator. Unlike other three-row SUVs, where you have to choose between a second-row bench and captain’s chairs, limiting the number of passengers, the Pilot’s removable middle second-row seat allows versatile seating for seven or eight passengers. In most trims, except the TrailSport, this middle seat conveniently retracts under the cargo area floor. The Pilot also impresses with thoughtful, family-friendly storage solutions and a well-designed driving experience that matches Honda’s reputation.

Kia Sorento

With the exterior dimensions of a two-row midsize SUV, the Kia Sorento skillfully incorporates a third row for occasional use.

Updated for 2021, the Sorento offers a stylish exterior, various trim options such as the sporty SX Prestige and rugged X-Line, and a refined interior with abundant convenient technology. The Sorento also stands out with different fuel-efficient powertrains, including a base engine, a powerful turbo motor, a traditional 37-mph hybrid, and a sought-after plug-in hybrid. However, the latter is now hard to find due to supply shortages.

So, that’s my compilation and I hope it’ll be helpful for those looking for SUVs. Wish everyone good deals and safe roads!
